NO MORE ROOM
FOR VROOM?
SPRING 2023
BRIEF
I was tasked with designing a magazine spread that showcased an original editorial cover illustration. The illustration needed to convey the main ideas of the article and the layout needed to establish a clear visual hierarchy.
MOODBOARD
I scanned through several artists' illustrations, and was drawn to works that incorporated simplified forms and bright color palettes. I also looked at a variety of magazine spreads, and admired how designers extended content across the fold of the page.
SKETCHES
My assigned article was about the potential ban of e-scooters in Paris. Based on the topic, I knew my illustration needed to ultimately communicate a sense of conflict. After playing with several concepts, two stood out. Both of them were based on a court scene, but the one that carried the most visual power was the one with a gavel smashing an e-scooter into pieces.
FINAL ILLUSTRATION
I recreated the sketch using Procreate on my iPad. I wanted the illustration to be more dynamic, so I incorporated three different positions of the gavel with increasing levels of opacity. I also included three silhouetted figures to fill in the negative space.
FINAL LAYOUT
I placed the illustration so that the arm and gavel direct the viewer's eye across the page. Because the article highlights the pros and cons of e-scooters, I decided to color the layout with a shade of yellow, as it stimulates the mind and improves analysis.
